Goal setting, strategy and technical corrections were the major themes of Day 2 at the ThinkBeef.ca Team Homan Junior Curling Camp. Each of our 80 curlers received one-on-one time with members of Team Homan, Brett Gallant and our guest speakers throughout the action packed day at the Ottawa Curling Club.

This is the fourth year we’ve hosted this event for junior curlers looking to grow their game and grow as young individuals in the sport. (Read more about our annual camp here.)

Our morning started with the arrival of two-time Brier champion and World champion Brett Gallant who worked with our strength trainer Neil Frotten to instill the importance of setting goals and taught campers how to achieve them in our post-breakfast classroom discussion. Curlers were on the ice receiving individual technical feedback from each of us along with our former coach Earle Morris throughout the morning.

After lunch our curlers were captivated by an entertaining and inspirational speech by Mark Hatfield. Thanks to Proud To Be Me for allowing us to host Mark to discuss his rise from a high school student to reaching the NFL. The Ottawa native captivated our junior curlers with his story and outlined how goal setting got him to the pinnacle league in his sport.

One of the biggest requests of our campers every year is to learn about game strategy. We’re fortunate to have Earle Morris part of our camp to discuss proper strategy. Curlers went home with a better understanding of risk vs. reward, playing to their strengths and knowing when to capitalize all thanks to Earle’s teachings.

We again hit the ice in the afternoon for a round robin of technical stations. Each member of Team Homan and Brett, along with our guest instructors Adam Kingsbury, Cheryl Kreviazuk, Joey Taylor and Ben Miskew moved campers through various components of their on-ice technical skills.

We enjoyed a delicious pizza party thanks to Gabriel Pizza on Saturday evening. Campers were fueled up and prepared with plenty of questions for Team Homan during our Ask Team Homan Anything panel.

This year we received dozens of questions for Rachel, Emma, Joanne, Lisa and Brett and we invited families to join us for the one hour session. We answered their questions about balancing their young curling careers with academics, changes to our game, handling pressure and random facts about our team they may not have known before coming to camp.

Our prize table - complete with plenty of signed jerseys/jackets, brooms, shoes, banners and other items - is setup and ready for our campers to pull from as the lucky winner’s names get drawn on our closing day on Sunday.

The ThinkBeef.ca Team Homan Junior Curling Camp will be back on the ice Sunday improving technical skills, learning about Brett’s world mixed doubles experience and of course … the Great Team Homan Shootout!
