ThinkBeef.ca Team Homan Junior Camp FAQ
Q. What skill level does my child need to attend your camp?
A. We recommend having fundamental curling skills and a minimum 1-2 years of curling experience. This camp is not a first introduction to curling. Our camp offers youth curlers of a variety of levels and ages an opportunity to learn high performance skills from the top ranked curling team in the world and its support team of coaches, mental performance consultants, and strength trainer. Campers will build on their existing skills and knowledge, on and off the ice. Campers will be grouped by age and skill level.
Q. What ages are allowed at camp?
A. New this year – we have lowered the minimum age. Campers need to be a minimum 11 years old as of the first day of Camp – no exceptions! At the older end, campers must meet the age restrictions to qualify for U-21.
Q. My child attended Team Homan Junior Curling Camp last year or in previous years. Is the camp going to be the same this year?
A. Each year we strive to improve our camp and keep the curriculum fresh. We hope to have repeat campers, so we have new off-ice presentations and different on-ice sessions mixed in with fundamental skills training.
Q. Is the camp for teams or individuals?
A. Both! Campers will be divided into groups, and we strive to keep teammates together. The majority of kids sign up as individuals, and we try to create an environment where all the campers get to meet and interact with each other. We all went to curling camps when we were younger and we think the social aspect is one of the best parts of camp. Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated.
Q. Are parents and coaches allowed to attend camp?
A. No.The facility isn't large enough to accommodate everyone, so the club is open to just the campers and camp instructors during camp hours. We will have a 15-minute pickup and drop off window for parents. Don’t worry, your kids are in good hands with us! We appreciate the support parents and coaches provide and we will encourage all campers to take detailed notes to share after camp. Parents, families and coaches are only invited to our Up Close and Personal Q&A session on Saturday evening.
Q. My child has an injury, can they still attend?
A. We recommend you consult your doctor and do what is in the best interest of your child's health. If your child has an injury and attends camp, we recommend that for the on ice sessions they only do what they feel comfortable doing, and stop if they feel any pain or issues with their injury.
Q. Can we come if we are from out of town?
A. Yes! There are lots of accommodation options around the Ottawa Curling Club including hotels and short-term house and apartment rentals.
Q. Can we come if we do not speak English?
A. Instruction is provided in English only. Campers need to be able to communicate with us and receive instruction in English. In the past, we have made exceptions for competitive teams who bring a translator. Please contact us before registering if this is the case.
Q. My child has allergies/dietary concerns. Will you provide special meals?
A. No, we cannot guarantee special meals to fit dietary restrictions. Your child should bring meals and snacks they know they can eat. We have access to a refrigerator and microwave at the club. We strive to make Camp a nut-free environment.
Q. What is your cancellation policy?
A. You may cancel up to August 16th and receive a refund, less a $125 administration fee. After August 16th, cancellations are non-refundable.
Q. Do you have a waiting list?
A. Yes! Once the 80 spots have been filled, we will create a waiting list, based on first come, first served. If you are interested in being added to the list, please contact us.
